Catherine J. Karfelt 98, a life long resident of Mount Pleasant passed away Friday, November 16, 2012 at the Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. Catherine was born January 21, 1914 in Mammoth the daughter of the late John and Catherine Kendi Frena. She was the co-founder of the Karfelt Department Store, Mt. Pleasant. Catherine was a member of the Visitation Roman Catholic Church and attended St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant; a member of the ladies auxiliaries of the , Kosciuszko Club, Standard Shaft Citizens clubs, past president of the Mount Pleasant American Legion Post 446, VFW Post 3368 Mt. Pleasant, Ladies of Mt. Carmel Society, St. Pius X Rosary Society and a member of the former C.S.A. Lodge #171Westmoreland. She was a student of the former Mammoth School. Surviving are her children, Robert J. Karfelt and wife Donna of Scottdale, Joann V. Shupe and husband Roger of Mount Pleasant, Mary C. Shal of Virginia and Phyllis M. Kluska and husband Marion of Greensburg; brothers, John Frena of Norvelt and Richard Frena of Mount Pleasant; sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) Mizikar and husband Joseph of Mammoth, Jean Sternick and husband Sam of Greensburg and Dolores Moxinchalk and husband Phillip of Latrobe; 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Karfelt, Sr, a son Charles W. Karfelt, Jr and sisters, Margaret Mash, Mary Polinelli and Agnes Frena. Family and friends are welcome from 2-4 & 7-9PM Monday and Tuesday to the SALOOM-REGA FUNERAL SERVICE, INC 730 W. Main Street Mount Pleasant (724-547-2122) where a blessing service will be held Weds at 9:30AM followed by Catherine's funeral mass at 10AM in the Visitation Roman Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Richard J. Kosisko as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The American Legion Post 446 Ladies Auxiliary will conduct a service Monday at 3PM in the funeral home; a parish wake service will be held Tuesday at 3PM in the funeral home.
