On March 22, 2024, Robert Wayne Malone of Ruffs Dale, Pa. passed away peacefully. He was 94.
Wayne was born on Nov. 5, 1929, at his home in downtown Ruffs Dale. His family later moved to a farm just outside the village limits, and he eventually moved into his own home across the street where he and his wife raised a family. After graduating from East Huntingdon High School in 1947, Wayne coached preteens in basketball at the former Ruffs Dale Elementary School while also playing on two YMCA basketball teams. He also participated on a baseball team in Ruffs Dale.
In addition to his work on the family farm, he also worked on the railroad for about four years. He spent three months living in Viriginia while he was in the Army. He was honorably discharged following a severe case of rhuematic fever.
On Saturday evenings, he loved to roller skate at Steiner’s Roller Rink in Scottdale. There he met his future wife, Carole Ann Kreinbrook. They dated and made plans to marry after she was offered a teaching job. They wed on June 15, 1963, at the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church and honeymooned in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
Just prior to getting married, Wayne began his dream job: rural mail carrier for the Ruffs Dale Post Office.
He got to know everybody on his route as he delivered letters and packages. He also sold stamps and money orders. During his 38 ½ years on the job, he typically worked six days per week. Wayne received a certificate of appreciation from the U. S. Postal Service for accident-free driving for his entire career. He retired in 1995, and he was a lifetime member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association and a member of the Hecla Sportsman’s Club.
Having been born just one week into the start of the Great Depression, Wayne learned to be resourceful. He could fix almost anything - including many common issues with American-made cars. He also loved watching the Steelers, reading the newspaper, traveling to Florida and being outdoors. He especially enjoyed feeding the birds and watching the wildlife that wandered through his backyard. But most of all, he liked spending time with his loving family.
Wayne was a member of the former Zion Lutheran Church in Ruffs Dale where he served on the church council for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Carole (Kreinbrook) Malone. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last June with a small gathering at the Hampton Inn in New Stanton.
In addition, he leaves behind three children: Robert David Malone (and his wife, Crystal Malone) of Ruffs Dale, Susan Carole Malone, PhD (and her husband, Peter Carnochan) of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mark Wayne Malone of Ruffs Dale.
He also leaves behind five grandchildren - Kayla Fasekas (and her husband, Neil Fasekas), Robert Randall Malone, Scarlett Malone Carnochan, Sienna Malone Carnochan and Spencer Malone Carnochan - and one great-grandchild, Joshua Michael Fasekas. And he leaves behind three sisters-in-law: Jane Lauffer, Barbara Malone and Sondra Freed.
He is predeceased by his parents, Clyde and Garnet (Stoner) Malone, and his siblings Margery Morton, Frank Malone, Eugene Malone and Billy S. Malone.
